The world is becoming increasingly digital, with individuals, families, and organizations relying on connected devices and online platforms for nearly every aspect of daily life. While this digital transformation has made things more convenient, it has also introduced new vulnerabilities. Cyber threats—ranging from phishing scams and data breaches to identity theft—have become a part of life for ordinary people, not just large organizations. In the past year, these risks have grown alarmingly common. Reports of hacked email accounts, stolen credit card numbers, and compromised passwords have skyrocketed. Yet, most individuals lack the tools or knowledge to adequately protect themselves. The typical user is overwhelmed by cybersecurity jargon, multiple account logins, and the constant fear of clicking the wrong link.
Within 24 hours, my team (4 people) and I ideated and prototyped an iPhone app for cybersecurity. For this project, I utilized Figma and was one of two UX designers on the team. Additionally, I collaborated with the slide deck team (2 people) and pitched to a panel of esteemed product managers from Meta, Google, and Facebook.
Desert is an iPhone app that empowers users—particularly young adults—by making cybersecurity simple, accessible, and engaging. It provides real-time threat detection using AI-driven URL scanning and algorithmic scoring to identify phishing attempts in texts and messages. Integrated directly into iMessage, Desert offers instant security insights on suspicious links and numbers, ensuring seamless protection within everyday conversations. The app also features a gamified learning experience called "Dunes," delivering bite-sized, interactive cybersecurity education to help users recognize and avoid scams. Designed with ease of use in mind, Desert makes security checks quick and effortless. As cyber threats continue to rise, young adults aged 18 to 24 are increasingly vulnerable, yet many find cybersecurity overwhelming, leading to poor digital hygiene. Desert bridges the gap between awareness and action by simplifying security while engaging and educating users. By combining AI-driven protection, mobile-first convenience, and gamified learning, Desert transforms digital safety into an effortless daily habit.
